Regulatory Express | EN IEC61347-1 latest standard requirements analysis

Add time:12th,Sep,2025

The new standard IEC 61347-1:2024, published on 2024-06-14 was subsequently released by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization CENELEC as EN IEC 61347-1:2024 later the year.

EN IEC 61347-1:2024 version update, the main changes that need to be focused on evaluation

1. Cl.1 Scope: The applicable DC voltage is changed from 1000V to 1500V.

2. Cl.4 General requirements: For the sentence “independent control gear shall also comply with the requirements of IEC 60598-1” “independent control gear shall also comply with the relevant parts of the IEC 60598-2 series of standards, the specific part to which it is to conform that declared by the manufacturer as being the one most nearly representing its construction and mode of use”.

3.Cl.6 Information and Marking:

More specific requirements for the insulation of control circuits and the corresponding marking;

If there is no insulation between the control circuit and the power supply, it must be marked at the control terminal;

If there is no insulation between the SELV output and the SELV control circuit, the following information or similar shall be marked: “Warning — Risk electric shock — Not to be used for the control of devices where the control circuits are interconnected, since this may increase the touch current”.

Introduce a new type of protected emergency lighting control device.

4.Cl.7 Terminals: Requirements for terminals have been modified so that non-integral terminals can also be tested to IEC 60598-.

5. Cl.8 Earthing: Increased protection extra-low voltage (PELV) requirements.

6. Cl.9 To prevent accidental contact with dangerous live parts.

Increased ELV limit requirements;

Increased touch current requirements for safety extra low voltage (SELV) and protective extra low voltage (PELV).

7. Cl.10 Insulation resistance and electrical strength: The use of an alternative direct current electrical strength test is permitted.

8. Cl.11 Fault condition: Increased requirements:

The fault test shall be carried out with the enclosure at the rated enclosure temperature tc. The fault condition shall then be applied for a period of 8 hours until the supply is interrupted. The test time may be shortened if the component temperature change is maintained within ±1 K for a period of 30 minutes

If the control device is marked with the protective earth symbol and the manufacturer states in the instructions that it is permitted to be used without an earth contact, the under fault conditions shall be carried out with and without an earth connection. For control devices marked with the functional earth symbol, the operation under fault conditions shall also be carried out with and an earth connection.

9. Cl.12.1: Increase the requirement of 550℃ hot wire test for impregnated fiber materials used as insulation

10. Cl.12.5: Increased requirements for pulse width modulation (PWM).

11.Cl. 15.3 Resistance to chipping: The test object “for built-in light control devices for luminaires, other than ordinary independent control devices” has been deleted;

12. Appendix E (normative) Test Requirements: The requirements for the ballast, the electrical characteristics of the light source, and the reference lamp have been removed

13. Appendix G (informative) Conformity testing during production: Proposal for the electrical strength routine test has been modified.

14. Appendix L (informative) : Overvoltage category III control devices :

Increased requirements for Y capacitor bridging;

Modify the electrical strength test voltage requirements, clearances, and distances through insulation of overvoltage Class III control devices.

15. Appendix M Lighting Design Information: New Section.

16. Appendix N (Normative) Touch Current Measurement: New section.
