The EU has officially passed the ban on BPA in food contact materials!

The European Commission has approved a ban on the use of bisphenol A in materials that come into contact with food, because it may pose a hazard to humans. The ban will mean that BPA cannot be used in products that come into contact with food or drink, such as the inner coatings of metal, reusable plastic water bottles, water coolers and other kitchenware.

1.Ban the use of BPA in FCM

The use of bisphenol A and its salts in food contact adhesives, rubber, ion exchange resins, plastics, printing inks silicone rubber, and varnishes and paints is prohibited.


2. Prohibition of residual BPA in FCM

BPA shall not be detectable in food contact materials and articles made from other bisphenols or bisphenol derivatives.


3. Prohibition of the use of other harmful bisphenols and bisphenol derivatives in FCM

The use of harmful bisphenols and bisphenol derivatives other than bisphenol A for the manufacture of materials and articles intended to come into contact with food is prohibited, except for specific applications authorized in accordance with Article 9 of (EC) No 1935/2004 and listed in Annex II (Table 1) of the proposal.


 4. Amendment (EU) No 10/2011

 • In Article 6 "Exemptions for substances not included in the Union list", the following shall be added: As a partial exemption Article 5, 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane ("bisphenol A" or "BPA") (CAS 80-05-7) and other harmful bisphenols or harmful bisphenol derivatives as defined in the proposal shall only be used to manufacture plastic and articles complying with the proposal [i.e. the plastic materials in Annex II (Table 1) of the proposal]; 

• Delete the authorizations No.151 and No. 154 for BPA and BPS in plastics.
