China’s core household appliance safety standards, the GB/T 4706 series, will take effect on August 1, 2026. The implementation of the updated GB/T 4706 series will effectively raise the overall safety level of household electrical appliances in China and create a safer and more reliable usage environment for consumers.

Key Notes on Newly Added Standard Categories

      This standard revision introduces multiple standards with brand-new serial numbers (no replaced standard numbers), such as:

GB/T 4706.112-2024, Safety of household and similar electrical appliances — Part 112: Particular requirements for dish disinfection cabinets

GB/T 4706.115-2024, Safety of household and similar electrical appliances — Part 115: Particular requirements for evaporative air coolers

      These product categories previously had no dedicated safety standards. The enforcement of the new standards provides clear testing basis for these products. Relevant enterprises shall obtain standard documents promptly and evaluate whether existing products require redesign or supplementary testing.

Attention to Changes in Standard Designations

      The latest GB/T 4706 series standards have changed from "GB" to "GB/T". This does not mean the safety requirements for household appliances have been relaxed. It represents a systematic adjustment under China’s national standardization reform. The core objective of this reform is to streamline and consolidate the overly complex mandatory standard system.

      Previously, there were more than 120 mandatory national standards for household appliance safety, forming an extensive system. After the reform, core mandatory safety requirements for Chinese household appliances have been consolidated into a small number of general mandatory national standards. Products specified in Table A.1 of Appendix A shall comply with corresponding recommended national standards (GB/T 4706 series). Therefore, these recommended standards carry equivalent legal effect to mandatory national standards.

      Accordingly, although classified as "recommended" standards with sophisticated and detailed technical content, the GB/T 4706 series actually serves as the optimal technical approach and reference model to meet the above general mandatory standards. It is aligned with the international IEC standards (IEC 60335 series), featuring more systematic and comprehensive content.
