Certification Introduction

      cULus is an NRTL safety certification issued by UL Solutions for both US and Canadian markets. The mark indicates that the product complies with ANSI/UL safety standards for the United States and CSA C22.2 safety standards for Canada. It is the most widely recognised safety certification for the North American market.

      UL is designated as an NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory) by OSHA in the US, and UL’s certification authority is also recognised by SCC in Canada. cULus‑Listed applies to finished end‑product certification; cURus is for internal components only and cannot be directly used for finished end products placed on the market.

      The certificate requires ongoing annual factory surveillance. The File Number can be verified for authenticity in UL’s official Product iQ database.

Product Scope

      Most finished electrical products including household appliances, IT equipment, audio‑visual products, lighting fixtures, power adapters, wires and cables, power tools, fire protection equipment, HVAC equipment, etc.

 

Application Process

1. Confirm applicable UL/CSA standards for the product and submit product drawings, BOM (Bill of Materials), and nameplate information.

2. Send samples to the laboratory for safety testing.

3. UL reviews the test report and complete documentation package.

4. Complete the initial factory inspection.

5. Upon approval, the cULus certificate is issued with authorisation to use the cULus Listed mark.

6. Print the mark on the nameplate of mass‑produced products. Annual factory surveillance audits are required thereafter to maintain certificate validity. Any product changes must be notified to the certification body for evaluation.

 

Certification Mark

      cULus Listed mark. The UL graphic logo together with “c” (Canada) and “us” (United States) identifiers must be printed, and the UL File Number must also be shown.

      Nameplates must use UL‑recognised durable label materials under the PGDQ2 / PGDQ8 labelling system. Labels shall be wear‑resistant, temperature‑resistant and non‑detachable; ordinary adhesive stickers are not permitted. For the Canadian market, nameplates are required to be bilingual in English and French. The logo cannot be redrawn manually; only UL official vector files may be used.

Mandatory status: NRTL safety compliance is mandatory for electrical products for engineering installation and supermarket access in the US; safety compliance is mandatory in Canada.

Certificate validity: No fixed expiry date. It remains valid as long as annual factory surveillance is maintained, together with unchanged product design and applicable standards. Retesting is required when standards are updated.

Factory audit requirement: Initial factory inspection plus annual surveillance audits.

Certificate holder requirement: The manufacturer may act as the certificate holder.
