Certification Introduction

      INMETRO INMETRO stands for the National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality of Brazil. INMETRO Certification is Brazil’s most important mandatory national product conformity assessment scheme, regulating product safety, health, metrology and environmental protection requirements. Certificates are issued by OCP third‑party organisations accredited by INMETRO.

      INMETRO Products listed in the mandatory catalogue must obtain an INMETRO registration certificate and affix the INMETRO mark to clear customs and be sold in Brazil. For radiocommunication products, ANATEL radio frequency certification is required in addition to INMETRO safety certification. Some household appliances also require the Brazilian PBE energy efficiency label. Product manuals must be in Portuguese, and a local Brazilian legal entity shall be appointed as the authorised representative.

Product Scope

The mandatory regulated product categories cover a wide range:

      1. Household appliances: refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, ovens, water heaters and small home appliances.

      2. Lighting luminaires, wires and cables, plugs and sockets.

      3. All children’s toys for users under 14 years old.

      4. Automotive safety components and tyres.

      5. Selected medical devices, gas appliances, fire extinguishers, etc.

Application Process

      1. Confirm the applicable Brazilian regulatory Portaria for the product and select the certification module (Module 5 is most widely used in the industry: type test + factory audit + annual surveillance).

      2. Appoint a local Brazilian authorised representative.

      3. Test samples in an INMETRO‑recognised laboratory in accordance with Brazilian NBR standards.

      4. The OCP carries out a factory audit to verify quality control and product consistency.

      5. After both testing and factory audit are passed, the OCP issues the INMETRO certificate and completes registration on the official INMETRO system.

      6. Print the INMETRO mark and certificate registration number on the product or nameplate.

      7. Annual surveillance audits are conducted every 12–15 months after certification to maintain certificate validity.

Certification Mark

      INMETRO “I” The official INMETRO “I” logo shall be printed on the product or nameplate, together with the certificate registration number. Labels and user manuals must be written in Portuguese. Unauthorized modification of the logo graphic is prohibited; only officially authorised vector files may be used.
