Service Background

      Australia is a federal country officially known as The Commonwealth of Australia, comprising six states and two territories. In Australia, both the federal government and individual states/territories have legislative, judicial and executive powers. Where state or territory regulations conflict with federal legislation, federal law prevails. For voluntary toy standards, Australia adopts the AS/NZS ISO 8124 series, which specifies safety requirements for toys covering mechanical, physical, chemical and flammability properties. AS/NZS 62115 is the safety standard for electric toys, covering toys with at least one electrically powered function. In addition, a set of mandatory standards and prohibition notices issued under the Australian Consumer Law and the Trade Practices Act contain requirements applicable to toy products.

Scope of Application

      Applicable to all toys: any product or material designed or clearly intended to be used for play by children under 14 years of age.
